Visiting the Children’s Advocacy Center
This page is a great way to prepare parents and children for their visit to the Children’s Advocacy Center of the 1st Judicial District! Knowing what to expect can help ease concerns of families and children. Follow us through this document for photos and information about what will happen at your time here!
You may have already gotten a visit at your home from a police officer or a child protective services worker! OR you may be meeting them for the first time at the CAC. They are safe people to talk to!
The police officer or CPS worker scheduled an appointment for you to do a Forensic Interview at the Children’s Advocacy Center!
Here’s what to expect on the day of your interview!
On the day of your Forensic Interview
You will come here! 201 E Myrtle Avenue, Johnson City, TN.
The CAC is a safe place for kids where you can tell your story! When you get to the CAC, you will park and come to the door.
Next, you will ring the doorbell!
When you come in the door
You will be able to take a seat anywhere that is comfortable for you! There will be books, coloring books and more that you can play with while you wait!
Next,
A Forensic Interviewer will come to greet you! You will follow them through the hallway to the interview room. They will show you that there are two cameras in the room. Your interview is recorded so you do not have to repeat your story over and over! While you share your story, there are crayons and paper for coloring.
This is a SAFE place!
While you are talking to Carey or Hannah, the Family Advocates will talk to your caregivers! Your caregivers will be there waiting on you when you get done with your interview.
When you get done
the Family Advocate will bring you back to your caregiver and ask the people watching in the observation room if they want to speak to your caregivers. Sometimes, your caregiver will go to a room to speak with police or CPS.
You can play with a Family Advocate or play alone while you wait!
After you get to tell your story, you get to leave! Sometimes you may have another appointment here.
When you come back to the CAC
You may have a medical exam where you meet with Dr. Mills! Usually, when you come back, it is for a different kind of appointment. Paula is our therapist and she provides a safe place for kids just like you to talk!
Sometimes your caregivers will come to the room with you and sometimes it will just be you and Paula! Paula also has some games and toys that help you explain or understand your emotions!
Now that you know about the CAC
We hope you feel more prepared for your visit! Our staff will do our best to make YOU and your caregivers feel safe and welcome while you are here!
We will even call to check-in days after you’ve left!
